Adoption

Our Mission
The mission of Family Support Systems’ Adoption program is to provide a stable secure family life for children who cannot be cared for by their biological family, and who are in the need of permanency planning through adoption. We endeavor to secure a safe and permanent home for children in care, who have been legally freed from their biological parents.

There are SEVEN basic steps in adopting your child :

  1. Choose an adoption agency, public or private
  2. Submit an application
  3. Complete the Home study
  4. Identify the right child for you
  5. Visit with your child
  6. Complete the six-month supervisory period
  7. Legalize the adoption

Why adopt a child?
The number of children requiring permanent homes is continuously growing at an incredible rate in the Bronx, as well as the rest of New York City. The adoption system was created to legalize the relationship between the adoptive parent and the legally freed child. Upon completion of an adoption, both adoptive parent and child have all rights and responsibilities that are the same as any birth family.

Our children are our future, and if we want a positive one, then we must unite and accept responsibility for the youth that are without the stability of a family. A family provides a child with a sense of security that is irreplaceable. A child that grows without that support experiences a void that may contribute to many problems throughout his/her life.

Yes, YOU can adopt! The requirements for becoming an adoptive parent are quite flexible. Our major concern is that you are willing to share your love, time, and home with a child.

Family Support Systems’ Basic Requirements :

  • You must have the capacity to give and receive affection.
  • You must have the capacity to provide for a child’s physical and emotional needs.
  • You must be able to cope with problems, stress and frustration.
  • You must be 18 years or older.
  • You must be of such physical condition that it is reasonable to expect you to live until the child’s maturity, and have the energy to fulfill your parental responsibilities.
  • You can be single, legally separated, divorced, or living separately from your spouse over a three-year period.
It takes a village to raise a child, but only a parent to adopt one… We are looking for you to be a part of our village. ADOPT A CHILD!
