Education & Youth Services

Our Mission
The mission of Family Support Systems’ Educational & Youth Services Department is to motivate each young person to do his/her best in either an academic or vocational setting. We believe that this process begins with appreciation for the right of the family and youth to determine their own destiny. The Educational & Youth Services Department supports this belief by working with families in a manner that is flexible, respectful and empathetic. It is our goal to empower them to interact with the educational system in a more informed and collaborative manner.

The Educational / Youth Services Department supports Family Support Systems Unlimited, Inc.’s mission in the belief that children and families are our most precious resource. Through our innovative programs, we will continue to work with families to enable them to participate fully as responsible, informed citizens of their community.

Young Astronauts' Program
The Young Astronauts' Program is an international educational program for elementary, intermediate and high school students. It is designed to promote the study of reading, mathematics, science & technology, using the theme of space to motivate interest and learning. The program uses hands-on activities, science experiments, and mathematical games to develop critical thinking skills.

Cultural Arts / Rites of Passage Program
The Rites of Passage Program seeks to assist “at-risk” African American and Latino youth between the ages of 10-18 years in the following areas :

  • Acquiring the life skills and experience necessary to function as young responsible adults;
  • Enhancing youth’s awareness of his/her mental and physical capabilities;
  • Teaching them to appreciate their culture and ancestors;
  • Increasing each young person’s ability to handle conflicts in a more positive, effective manner.

An instructor directs cultural heritage experiences through dance, music, and martial arts. The classes are held on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays.
